When To Eat Carbs?

Most of us love carbs, well I definitely do! If I didn’t track how many I ate, they’d probably take up around 80% of my diet. Although we do need carbs, (don’t try cutting them out completely, or you’ll see the effects) they can be detrimental to our diet if we eat too much of them, or if we don’t eat them at the best times.

So when is the best time to eat them?

1.    Morning

Whilst you’re sleeping, your body fasts and uses up some of the carbohydrates that it stores away (glycogen). So in the morning, you have space to replenish these carbohydrates, and as long as you don’t eat too much, they won’t be stored as fat, but instead, be used during your morning activities!

Here's one of my favorite breakfast treats:

Avocado on toast with banana and honey!

2.    Before you work-out

Carbohydrates provide an amazing form of energy before you work out. I usually eat a banana around an hour before and it really helps give me more energy and train harder, and therefore I get more out of my workout. Simple carbs (the ones that are easily digestible) are the best kind.

3.    After you work-out

After you work out, it’s actually better to eat carbs than to not.  During your workout, glycogen (the stored carbs) will have been used up, so eating carbs after you work out will replenish these, so again, they won’t be stored as fat! Hurrah! Furthermore, carbs help insulin get to the muscles, which in turn, helps protein break down muscle tissue. So you actually need carbohydrates to help your muscles recover properly.

So there you have it, the best times to eat your carbs, so that they’re used well and not simply stored away as fat. If you’re not going to be using them (for example, right before bed) then they’re best avoided. So try and steer clear of those midnight snacks!

Lots of love ‘n’ stuff,
